Firmware Upgrade disables Write-Cache

Upgrading DS Storage Subsystems to 07.60.28.00, it has been noticed that after the upgrade the write cache has been disabled. (Similar problems have been seen when the cache batteries are expired.) This is a known problem to IBM, and will affect subsystem performance. The subsystem shows ‘Optimal’ at all times, there are no clear entries within the Major Event Log (MEL) to indicate this problem.

This has been resolved by either powering everything down and back up, or by resetting each controller one at a time tpo avoid downtime.

I logged this with IBM and they have informed me that this is an issue with the level of code. If you do perform any subsystem updates to this level, please check the profile when complete to ensure write cache is still enabled.

Firmware Upgrade disables Media Scrubbing

After upgrading a DS4000 Storage Server to firmware version 7.10.23, the Media Scan will be disabled on all previously enabled Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs). The event log will not log any media scan events, which is the only indication of this problem. Re-enabling media scan must be done at the controller level and at the LUN level as follows:

  1. Open the Storage Manager Enterprise window.
  2. Select Storage System to open the Storage Management window.
  3. Right-click Storage System in the window. This will be the top-most item in the list.
  4. Click on Change and then Media Scan Settings, from the pop-up menu.
  5. Ensure that the Enable background media scan checkbox is ebabled. This enables media scan at the controller level. Select OK to close the Change Media Scan Settings window.
  6. Highlight any LUN in the window, and then right-click to open the pop-up menu.
  7. From the pop-up menu, select Change then Media Scan settings.
  8. Ensure that the Enable background media scan checkbox is enabled. The user may also select the LUNs that they wish to have media scan turned on from this window as well. This is considered media scan enablement at the LUN level.

After the upgrade to 7.10.23.00, the media scan at the controller level and LUN level box is not marked. Make sure that this box is marked to ensure that media scan is turned on for the selected LUNs.
