DS3000 Specific Elements

IBM System Storage DS3000 series is a new family of storage enclosures from IBM. They are specifically designed to address the needs of the small-and medium-sized businesses. The DS3300, DS3400, and EXP3000 Express Models combine popular options that can enable users to easily create their storage configurations. With many small business, IT departments having one or a part-time administrator, and limited time to spend on data management, the DS3000 series can be easily installed without extensive knowledge or effort.

The DS3000 Storage Manager software was designed for easy implementation for an unseasoned administrator. The task-oriented management interface of the DS3000 Storage Manager presents tasks to the administrator first and then asks which object to perform the task on. The DS3000 series capacity is increased by either adding HDDs or by expanding the configuration by adding EXP3000 expansion units. Both of these operations can be done without having to shut down the storage enclosure. This helps to limit the impact to your environment and gives users control of their data storage as they expand capacity on an as-needed basis.

Features include:

  • 2 U rack mount enclosure with 12 easily accessible drive bays
  • Support for RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10
  • Support for dual-ported and hot-swappable SAS disks at 10,000 and 15,000 rpm speeds
  • Support for dual-ported and hot-swappable SATA disks at 7,200 rpm speed
  • Scalability of up to 3.6 TB of internal physical storage capacity using 300 GB hot-swappable SAS disks
  • Scalability of up to 12 TB of internal physical storage capacity using 1000 GB hot-swappable SATA disks
  • Expandability by attaching up to three EXP3000s, or a total of 48 hard disk drives, for up to 48 TB physical storage capacity
  • Built-in reliability features with dual-redundant power-supplies standard
  • Three-year limited warranty on parts and labour

DS4000 Specific Elements

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 disk system is designed to provide solutions to address the needs of midrange/departmental storage requirements and deliver high performance, advanced function, high availability, modular and scalable storage capacity, with SAN attached Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity, and support for RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10. Advanced DS4000 storage management, copy service options, and optional advanced disaster recovery functions are also available for the DS4000 series, including FlashCopy, VolumeCopy, and Enhanced Remote Mirroring.

The DS4000 Storage Manager software is designed to help centralize storage management and simplify partitioning of the DS4000 series storage into as many virtual servers, and strategically allocate storage capacity to maximize storage space.

DS4000 storage systems offer various options for disk drive attachment. Depending on the particular DS4000 model, you have the choice of using high performance and highly reliable FC disks with the DS4000 EXP810 or DS4000 EXP710 Storage Expansion Units for your mission- critical server production data operations, or the DS4000 EXP100 Storage Expansion Units with Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) disks for small business, data archival, reference data and near-line applications. The EXP810 also has SATA disk drive features available as well as FC and SSD disk drives features.

Key potential benefits of the DS4000 family of storage systems include:

  • High-availability support - dual processors and many redundant hardware components
  • Scalability - from 73 GB to 168 TB of physical capacity
  • Performance - excellent throughput to help address application needs
  • Advanced DS4000 functions designed to support business continuance - FlashCopy, VolumeCopy, and Enhanced Remote Mirror

Note: DS4000 subsystems are not available as new from IBM, and have been withdrawn from market. EXP810 expansion units and disks are still currently available for upgrading existing environments. The high-end DS4000s have been replaced by the DS5000 series, while the low-end DS4000 units have been replaced by the DS3000 server.

DS5000 Specific Elements

The System Storage DS5000 series disk system is IBM's midrange disk offering, specifically designed to meet the needs of midrange/departmental storage requirements, delivering high performance, advanced function, high availability, modular and scalable storage capacity, with SAN-attached connectivity and optional iSCSI host connectivity, as well as support for RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, and 10.

DS5000 series members

  • DS5100 Storage Controller (1818-51A)
  • DS5300 Storage Controller (1818-53A)
  • EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit (1818-D1A)
  • EXP5060 High Density Storage Enclosure (1818-G1A)

The DS5000 series offering consists of the DS5100 and DS5300 high- performance storage controllers, EXP5000 storage expansion unit, and the EXP5060 high density storage enclosure. DS5100 and DS5300 controllers come packaged in 4U rack-mountable enclosures and have dual-active RAID controllers that operate at 4 Gbps or 8 Gbps FC speeds and 1 Gbps speed for attachment to iSCSI hosts.

The DS5000 series provides further investment protection with the ability to attach DS4000 EXP810 Expansion Units (upon approval via RPQ) or a combination of EXP5000s and EXP810s. This provides a rich set of upgrade paths to extend the DS4000 series installed base of EXP810s, while gaining the modular scalability and high performance built into the DS5000 family. Modular cache memory building blocks allow the DS5000 series to meet initial requirements, while providing the means to add more cache memory as needs dictate over time.
